Case Study
Client: Piers Partridge
Project: Strawdio in South West England
Date: September 2005
Size: 959m²
Piers is a musician who decided to build a music studio made of straw bales.
The roof was laid in September on top of a waterproof membrane, substrate in bags and an irrigation system.
This was a DIY construction using top soil from the build site that the client himself put into hessian bags and an irrigation system made from re-cycled rubber tyres.
The following year the roof had a beautiful show of flowers and again in its second season and subsequently.
Piers commented the following year after giving the roof its annual trim, "Quite fun really getting up on the roof and pushing huge armfuls of sweet smelling greenery over the edge. Now its got a haircut and I miss the luxuriant growth that was there before."
