Case Study

Client: Claire Hewetson- Brown

Project: Stable Roof - Ashe Warren Farm

Date: October 2008

Size: 90m² (L shaped roof)

A new stable block was required for Claires horse in 2008, so it seemed only fitting that was given a green roof. The block is L shaped with a shallow apex roof.

First of all a waterproof membrane was laid on the roof, followed by substrate in bags and then loose to fill in any gaps. Over this, as the roof is in an exposed area, an irrigation system was laid which would prevent the wildflower roof from drying out.

Finally the Wildflower Roof Turf was laid over this at the end of the summer in 2008.

Spring bulbs have also been added in to this roof to give a little colour during the early spring months.

Each Autumn the dead plants and grasses are strimmed down and removed, thus giving the new self-set seedlings a chance to get going before the first frosts.

The roof has provided a succession of colour over each growing season since then and promises to do the same this year.

Claire Hewetson-Brown said " its really quite pretty around the stables as well as on the roof, because the seeds drop onto the ground below giving a lovely show of colour through-out the summer"
