Bees & Butterflies Summer Scatter Mix

About the Product:

This colourful bulb mix works beautifully with both the more subtle native wildflower Landscape 34 turf and the more colourful Border Turf. The bulbs have been selected specifically for their appeal to both bees and butterflies and is a wonderful top up within a wildflower nectar bar during the summer months.

This selection of bulbs starts to flower in May through to August and all will grow to a substantial height that sees their flowers at the same level or slightly above the main flowering layer of the turf at that time. The tall straight stems provide an interesting structural perspective against the more wispy nature of the wildflowers and provides a lovely design juxtaposition for artistic landscapes. This selection of bulbs will also work in conjunction with the Spring scatter mixes and ideally you could lay both types together for a succession of structure and colour.

Please note these bulbs are AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE AND INSTALL SEPTEMBER TO DECEMBER.

Maintenance

There is no further maintenance to the under planted wildflower area, other than the cut and removal of all plant material within the autumn months, strimmed or mown to an inch off the ground. Mowing at any other time will affect the bulbs and is therefore not advised. The dead plant material from the bulbs will be covered by the wildflowers until it is all removed during the Autumn cut.

Please click the link for further information on how to under plant bulbs and maintain them in a wildflower area.

Planting Times

Bulbs should be planted between September and December, ideally when the ground temperature is between 4-8°C.

Densities

For a naturalised effect we recommend planting 20 bulbs per m². Denser looks can be achieved by doubling the rate.

Planting Methods

If planting whilst laying turf, for a naturalised effect, bulbs should be scattered from waist height onto prepared soil (a light tilth) and then covered over with the turf. The turf provides adequate cover so no additional soil or dibbing is required. Bulb sizes are mid sized and care should be taken not to put too much heavy weight on to the turf, so as not to damage the bulbs underneath.

Delivery

When ordering with wildflower turf, bags or crates can be added on to the pallets of turf at little or no extra cost. When ordering bags or crates of bulbs separately, carriage will be charged at cost.
